Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc is the largest manufacturer of marine instruments for measurement of salinity, temperature, pressure, dissolved oxygen, and related oceanographic variables. Major products include Conductivity/Temperature/Depth (CTD) profilers, multi-bottle in-situ water samplers, moored CT recorders, wave/tide recorders, dissolved oxygen sensors, and thermosalinographs (click here for a complete listing of all our products). As part of our commitment to advancing the science of ocean measurement, we are deeply invested in engineering, metrology, calibration, software development, data and scientific analysis, and other essential technologies that make our products better and broadly useful.
Sea-Bird was founded in 1979, and currently employs 95 people. About 60% of the company's annual sales of US $22,000,000 are made outside the United States. The company has been profitable each year, and has always devoted more than 10% of its yearly revenue to research and development. There is no long-term debt.
The company is wholly owned by its officers, Nordeen (Norge) Larson (President) and John Backes (Vice-President). Norge and John have extensive oceanographic and sea-going experience, form the active top management of the company, and also perform a large part of the engineering design.
Major responsibility for operating management is in the hands of Dave Armstrong (Production Manager), Rick Baumann (Operations Manager), Doug Bennett (Engineering Sales Manager), Heddy Gundersen (Business Manager), and Dave Murphy (Research and Development Manager).
