Senior Physical Oceanographer / Instrumentation Scientist     Customer Service Specialist

SENIOR PHYSICAL OCEANOGRAPHER / INSTRUMENTATION SCIENTIST

Brief Task Description

This is a new position for a PhD level candidate with broad knowledge of oceanographic instrumentation, instrument development and experimental oceanographic research. This position will work at the highest levels of the company to help guide the company as it develops, designs, and markets existing and future products.

This person reports directly to the President. This Senior Physical Oceanographer is accountable for the following:

  • Act as a company/customer liaison for product design and development in coordination with the sales and marketing team.
  • Serve as a liaison to the scientific community in coordination with other oceanographers and customer support staff within the company.
  • Work with the company’s R&D staff to ensure that instrument design is optimized for the highest quality data possible.
  • Manage and direct instrument design projects from conception to final product.
  • Conduct research on instrumentation and new product design. This research will be company funded or funded through grants and contracts from various agencies.
  • Consult with and help the Ocean Group forecast and manage new product direction and product development.

Qualification Requirements

The candidate must posses the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • PhD in Physical Oceanography, physics, or related field.
  • Published research related to acquiring and analyzing physical measurements in the water environment.
  • Broad knowledge of instrument design with the ability to visualize a design starting from first principles and working through to a finished instrument. Including:
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and refine oceanographic instrumentation.
  • Extensive knowledge of the physics and operational characteristics of sensor elements.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design issues as related to underwater oceanographic sensors.
  • Working understanding of analog and digital electronics.
  • The ability to direct a team of engineers and scientists throughout the design effort.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Physical requirements include: bend, sit, stand, kneel, crawl, turn/twist, and reach.
  • Ability to see and hear well (either naturally or with correction) and speak clearly.
  • Coordinate the movement of your eyes, hands, or fingers.
  • Frequent computer screen and keyboard use.
  • Frequently lift, carry or pull up to fifteen (15) pounds and/or occasionally lift, push or pull up to thirty (30) pounds.

CUSTOMER SERVICE SPECIALIST

Brief Task Description

This person reports directly to the Sales and Service Administrative Supervisor. A Customer Service Specialist is accountable for the following:

  • Coordinating administrative duties for exhibits and conferences:
  • Create and maintain list of upcoming events
  • Coordinate with various departments regarding requirements & plans for upcoming exhibits
  • Register participants, coordinate presenters and any special events
  • Order furniture, carpet, and/or auxiliary equipment as required
  • Print and pack product brochures
  • Coordinate packing and shipping of exhibit materials
  • Coordinate shipment of graphics and posters
  • Keep track of deadlines for above and communicate status to supervisor
  • Coordinate Sea-Bird Electronics (SBE) University training classes
  • Coordinate contract between SBE & hotel
    - Coordinate details with hotel catering and class set up
  • Maintain accurate list of enrollees
  • Correspond with enrollees regarding class space, travel plans etc.
  • Customer service functions including: answering phones, responding to customer inquiries, preparing correspondence, researching issues and facilitating resolution.
  • Respond to customer inquiries for missing invoices, delivery dates, etc.
  • Follow up with customers to get missing POs / billing info / shipping info
  • Coordinate daily ship list and verify complete billing and shipping information -- update and/or edit sales orders before shipping
  • On an as-needed basis, prepare documents and coordinate domestic and international shipping-- processing pack lists, invoices & shipping labels
  • Review, distribute, and/or respond to incoming email
  • Data enter new purchase orders into sales order database
  • Maintain and print price lists on an as-needed/directed basis
  • Coordinate status of pre-pay orders and email pro forma invoices
  • Perform additional tasks as required.

Qualification Requirements

The candidate must posses the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Above average attention to detail and strong commitment to accuracy
  • Professional level written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Self-driven, results-oriented with a positive outlook and a clear focus on high quality and business success
  • Mature, credible, and comfortable in dealing with scientist, engineers, and company executives
  • Data and fact-based problem solving skills
  • Strong project and time management skills
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
    - Two years post-secondary education (A.A. or A.S) highly preferred
  • 3-5 years of related administrative or customer service experience is required
    - Experience within a sales, accounting, or technical field is highly preferred

The employee must occasionally lift, carry, push or pull up to 20 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
