HydroCAT

Measures and records conductivity, temperature, depth, and optical dissolved oxygen. It is ideally suited for extended deployments in remote, biologically rich environments, for depths to 350 m.

Depending on the application, the HydroCAT can collect high-quality data for several months up to a year.

Excellent bio-fouling protection is provided by US EPA-approved anti-foulant devices, integral pump, and unique internal flow path, which minimizes flow between samples and provides stable measurements throughout a deployment.

Conductivity and temperature sensors are based on field-proven Sea-Bird Electronics (SBE) CTD products. The aged and pressure-protected thermistor has a long history of exceptional stability and accuracy. The oxygen sensor was designed by SBE to meet the demand for a low maintenance and high accuracy sensor for use in applications such as hypoxia monitoring. All HydroCAT sensors are built with careful choices of materials and geometry combined with superior electronics and calibration methodology to optimize field performance.

SDI-12 interface is in addition to RS-232 interface. Instrument can be set up via RS-232, using full set of commands, and then a more limited set of commands can be sent via SDI-12 to make small setup changes in the field.

HydroCAT functionality is similar to SBE 37-SMP and 37-SMP-ODO MicroCATs, but has a different form factor, limited depth, and more robust protections against bio-fouling, and is intended for coastal applications. MicroCATs are available for depths to 7000 m.

HCSMP.1022x No pressure sensor Pressure sensor is not field replaceable / swappable. While highest pressure rating gives you most flexibility in using HycroCAT, it is at expense of accuracy & resolution. It is advantageous to use lowest range pressure sensor compatible with your intended maximum operating depth, because accuracy & resolution are proportional to pressure sensor's full scale range. For example, comparing 100 & 350 m sensors:
  • 100 m sensor:
    initial accuracy = 0.1 m (= 0.1% * 100 m),
    resolution = 0.002 m (= 0.002% * 100 m)
  • 350 m sensor:
    initial accuracy =0.35 m (= 0.1% * 350 m),
    resolution = 0.007 m (= 0.002% * 350 m)

801542 AF24173 Anti-Foulant Device pair (spare, bagged, labeled for shipping) Anti-foulant devices fit into anti-foulant device cups at intake & exhaust. Anti-foulant devices included with standard shipment; these are spares.
Useful life varies, depending on several factors. We recommend that customers consider more frequent replacement when high biological activity & strong current flow (greater dilution of anti-foulant concentration) are present. Moored instruments in high growth & strong dilution environments have been known to obtain a few months of quality data, while drifters that operate in non-photic, less turbid deep ocean environments may achieve years of quality data. Experience may be strongest determining factor in specific deployment environments.

One set of batteries is included with standard shipment; 50441 are spares. Batteries are easily accessed by removing 2 screws from connector end cap & pulling out end cap.
