SBE 16plus V2 Strain Gauge Pressure Sensor Options
16p-2a 20 m strain gauge pressure sensor Pressure sensor is installed in connector end cap, & is not field replaceable / swappable. While highest pressure rating gives you most flexibility in using 16plus V2, it is at expense of accuracy & resolution. It is advantageous to use lowest range pressure sensor compatible with your intended maximum operating depth, because accuracy & resolution are proportional to pressure sensor's full scale range. For example, comparing 2000 & 7000 m sensors --
  • 2000 m sensor:
    initial accuracy = 2 m (= 0.1% * 2000 m),
    resolution = 0.04 m (= 0.002% * 2000 m)
  • 7000 m sensor:
    initial accuracy = 7 m (= 0.1% * 7000 m),
    resolution = 0.14 m (= 0.002% * 7000 m)
16p-2b 100 m strain gauge pressure sensor
16p-2c 350 m strain gauge pressure sensor
16p-2s 600 m strain gauge pressure sensor
16p-2d 1000 m strain gauge pressure sensor
16p-2e 2000 m strain gauge pressure sensor
16p-2f 3500 m strain gauge pressure sensor
16p-2g 7000 m strain gauge pressure sensor

SBE 16plus V2 Digiquartz Pressure Sensor Options (substitutes for strain gauge option)

16p-2h 45 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation Digiquartz pressure sensors provide better accuracy (0.02% of full scale range vs 0.1% of full scale range) & resolution (Digiquartz resolution dependent on user-programmable integration time) than strain gauge pressure sensors. See SBE 16plus V2 Strain Gauge Pressure Sensor Options above for photo of pressure sensor port; when used with Digiquartz, plug is replaced with nylon pressure capillary fitting.

Pressure sensor is installed in connector end cap, & is not field replaceable / swappable. For example, comparing 2000 psia (1400 m) & 6000 psia (4200 m) sensors --

  • 2000 psia (1400 m) sensor:
    initial accuracy = 0.28 m (= 0.02% * 1400 m)
  • 6000 psia (4200 m) sensor:
    initial accuracy = 0.84 m (= 0.02% * 4200 m)
16p-2i 100 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation
16p-2j 200 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation
16p-2k 300 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation
16p-2l 400 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation
16p-2m 1000 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation
16p-2n 2000 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation
16p-2o 3000 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation
16p-2p 6000 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation
16p-2q 10,000 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation
16p-2r 15,000 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation
SBE 16plus V2 Submersible Pump Options
16p-4a Add SBE 5M titanium pump for sensor flushing, Standard XSG/RMG connectors (includes data I/O & pump Y-cable 17709, & mount) SBE 5M pump is intended for providing pumped conductivity only. Pump provides better conductivity response & anti-foulant protection than non-pumped configuration. SBE 5M pump with plastic housing is rated to 600 m; SBE 5M pump with titanium housing is rated to 10,500 m.

Larger, more powerful SBE 5P or 5T is required if also planning to pump auxiliary sensors (such as dissolved oxygen, etc.). SBE 5P plastic pump is rated to 600 m; SBE 5T titanium pump is rated to 10,500 m. Operational characteristics of SBE 5P & 5T are identical.

Data I/O - Pump bulkhead connector on 16plus V2 is standard, so pump can be added in the field without requiring any modifications to 16plus V2. These all include pump, pump mount, & data I/O - pump Y-cable. 16p-4c, -4d, -4g, & -4h include Y-cable compatible with wet-pluggable bulkhead connectors on 16plus V2 & on pump.

16p-4b Add SBE 5T titanium pump for sensor flushing, Standard XSG/RMG connectors (includes data I/O & pump Y-cable 17709, & mount)

SBE 16plus V2 Wet-Pluggable Connector Option

16p-5 Substitute Wet-pluggable (MCBH) connectors for Standard (XSG) connectors on SEACAT bulkhead connectors & on extender & data I/O cables Wet-pluggable connectors may be mated in wet conditions. Their pins do not need to be dried before mating. By design, water on the connector pins is forced out as the connector is mated. However, they must not be mated or un-mated while submerged. Wet-pluggable connectors have a non-conducting guide pin to assist pin alignment & require less force to mate, making them easier to mate reliably under dark or cold conditions, compared to our standard (Impulse XSG/RMG) connectors. Like standard connectors, wet-pluggables need proper lubrication & require care during use to avoid trapping water in sockets.
MCBH wet-pluggable connectors -- photo not available

16p-5 option includes extender & data I/O cable compatible with wet-pluggable data I/O - pump bulkhead connector.

SBE 16plus V2 Dissolved Oxygen Sensor Options
16p-7a SBE 43 Dissolved Oxygen Sensor (Mooring Configuration), 7000 m (cable & mount included, requires option 16p-4b or -4f) See SBE 43 specification sheet for sensor description.

SBE 43 is available in 7000 m titanium (16p-7a or -7b) or 600 m plastic (16p-7c or -7d) housing.

SBE 43 connector type (standard or wet-pluggable) must match 16plus V2 connector type.

SBE 43 is plumbed in line between conductivity sensor & pump; consequently, system requires more powerful SBE 5P plastic pump (16p-4f or -4h) or SBE 5T titanium pump (16p-4b or -4d) instead of SBE 5M pump (16p-4a, -4c, -4e, or -4g). Operational characteristics of SBE 5P & 5T are identical.

SBE 43 Mooring Configuration differs from Profiling Configuration as follows:

  • Mooring configuration uses black plenum in place of white plenum, & black Tygon tubing (PN 31450) in place of clear Tygon tubing for plumbing, to reduce bio-fouling.
  • Mooring configuration uses 1 mil membrane in place of 0.5 mil membrane, to enhance long-term stability.

16p-7_ includes SBE 43, mount, & straight cable to connect sensor to 16plus V2 bulkhead connector. If connecting 2 sensors to 1 bulkhead connector, extra charge to substitute Y-cable applies in addition to 16p-7_ price.

Additional sensors not listed here ‑- fluorometers, transmissometers, turbidity meters, PAR sensors, etc. from third party manufacturers ‑- are compatible with 16plus V2. These sensors can be purchased from Sea-Bird & integrated with 16plus V2 at our factory, or you can purchase mount kits & cables from Sea-Bird & perform integration yourself. See Third Party portion of price list.

16p-7c SBE 43 Dissolved Oxygen Sensor (Mooring Configuration), 600 m plastic (cable & mount included, requires option 16p-4b or -4f)
16p-7d SBE 43 Dissolved Oxygen Sensor (Mooring Configuration) with Wet-pluggable connector, 600 m plastic (cable & mount included, requires option 16p-4d or -4h & 16p-5)
SBE 16plus V2 Alternate Serial Interface Option
16p-10 RS-485 (half duplex) serial interface (replaces RS-232 interface) Two-wire, RS-485 interface provides communication with individual 16plus V2 or with all 16plus V2s attached to RS-485 interface. This allows for coordination of sampling among many instruments. However, note that half-duplex communication is one-direction at a time (i.e., you cannot send commands & receive data at same time).
Note that RS-232 & RS-485 versions of 16plus V2 have separate manuals; see manual links at top of page.
SBE 16plus V2 Accessories
801542 AF24173 Anti-foulant Device (pair, bagged, labeled for shipping) (replaces PN 801347) Anti-foulant devices fit into anti-foulant device cups at each end of conductivity cell. Anti-foulant devices included with standard shipment; these are spares.
Useful life varies, depending on several factors. We recommend that customers consider more frequent replacement when high biological activity & strong current flow (greater dilution of the anti-foulant concentration) are present. Moored instruments in high growth & strong dilution environments have been known to obtain a few months of quality data, while drifters that operate in non-photic, less turbid deep ocean environments may achieve years of quality data. Experience may be strongest determining factor in specific deployment environments.
80291 9-cell series alkaline battery pack (solder connected) Batteries are easily accessed by unscrewing battery end cap. 16plus V2 comes standard with 9 D cell alkaline batteries (nominal 14 Ah), but can be powered with Electrochem lithium batteries for more power intensive / longer deployments.

Note: Sea-Bird does not supply Electrochem lithium batteries; you must purchase them elsewhere (see WGT's website for purchasing information). Shipping restrictions apply for Electrochem lithium batteries & assembled battery packs.
