Sea-Bird Scientific has been working with Honeywell to re-start the production of the sensing elements needed for the Deep SeapHOx (ISFET chip) and the Shallow SeaFET/SeapHOx (gel-based DuraFET).

The timeline for restarting service and production of Shallow SeaFETs and SeapHOxes is slightly behind compared to Deep units. This is because first articles of the gel-based DuraFET that is used for the Shallow SeaFET and SeapHOx have not yet been received at Sea-Bird Scientific. These are expected by the end of July and will then go through their own rigorous qualification process to validate use in our products. If received on time, we will likely be able to determine if they meet our quality standards by the end of August.

We will resume service of Shallow SeaFETs and SeapHOxes as our first priority for the available inventory for DuraFETs and will start accepting quote requests for new units once qualification has been confirmed.

The lead time for new units depends on the ability of the supplier to deliver high quality, gel-based DuraFETs on time, but will likely be long. Our expectation with current knowledge is to restart production for Shallow SeaFET and SeapHOxes in early 2024.

An update to this information will be provided in August and details will be posted here.

Other pH product lines that include the HydroCAT-EP V2, SBE 18, and SBE 27 are not impacted by this validation process with Honeywell and remain serviceable and active for new production orders.

Accurate long-term pH measurements
Both the SeapHOx™ V2 and 2000 m Deep SeapHOx™ V2 allow for integrated measurements of conductivity, temperature, depth, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and pH. The pumped flow path and anti-fouling technology can extend deployment time. The ISFET-based pH sensor provides high accuracy, resolution, and long-term stability. the integrated CTD provides temperature, salinity, pressure, and dissolved oxygen data, with pumped flow and anti-fouling technology.

Pressure sensor is installed in MicroCAT end cap (behind mount clamp), & is not field replaceable / swappable. While highest pressure rating gives you most flexibility in using MicroCAT, it is at expense of accuracy & resolution. It is advantageous to use lowest range pressure sensor compatible with your intended maximum operating depth, because accuracy & resolution are proportional to pressure sensor's full scale range. For example, comparing 20 & 100 m sensors:

  • 20 m sensor:
    initial accuracy = 0.02 m (= 0.1% * 20 m),
    resolution = 0.0004 m (= 0.002% * 20 m)
  • 100 m sensor:
    initial accuracy = 0.1 m (= 0.1% * 100 m),
    resolution = 0.002 m (= 0.002% * 100 m)

Cable fits loosely through wire guide, & is clamped only at mounting clamp. See document 67219. '.I' designation indicates that guide and clamp are to be installed on instrument at factory.

Thread for clamping to mooring cable:

  • 1/4 in. diameter: 1/4-28 UNF
  • 5/16 in./8 mm diameter: 5/16-24 UNF
  • 3/8 in. diameter: 3/8-24 UNF
  • 1/2 in. diameter: 9/16-12 UNC
  • 6 mm diameter: 1/4-20 UNF
  • 10 mm diameter: 7/16 -14 UNF
  • 12 mm diameter: 1/2-13 UNF

Clamp Size Note: Mooring wire is typically specified by wire size, not by outer diameter (O.D.) of the mooring wire jacket. Verify the wire jacket O.D. before selecting the clamp size. The clamp size must be less than or equal to the wire jacket O.D. but larger than the wire diameter. For example, Mooring System Inc.’s specifications for 3x19 wire rope (in 2016) are as follows:

For mounting on a rope, verify the rope outer diameter, and select a clamp smaller than the rope O.D. to account for the rope compressibility (for example, for 5/16 inch rope, select a ¼ inch clamp; a 5/16 inch clamp will be too large).
