  • May 2018 - Standard profiling floats are limited to the upper 2000 meters of the ocean, stopping their descent before entering the deepest layers of the ocean. Deep Argo floats, reminiscent of spherical lanterns, can dive to 6000 meters to shed light on conditions in abyssal zone. They incorporate the Sea-Bird Scientific Deep Argo CTD (SBE 61) for high-accuracy measurements required to resolve subtly changing conditions in the deep ocean. The Paul Allen Foundation has committed over $4 million to the Jump-Starting Deep Argo project, aiming to move Deep Argo floats out of the pilot phase and into full operation.
  • April 2018 - A SeaExplorer, ALSEAMAR’s wingless autonomous glider, embarked on a successful mission in the frigid Barents Sea in 2014. Equipped with a digital magnetic compass and a Sea-Bird Glider Payload CTD, SBE 43, and ECO Puck, the SeaExplorer voyaged across 388 km of the central Barents Sea over 19 days with battery life to spare. The mission encompassed 351 full depth profiles with high resolution physical and biological oceanographic data.
